10,000 Murmurs

18 Oct: Opening Reception
2pm – 5pm
We live among murmurs: messages, headlines, game updates, a friend’s dinner, a stranger’s holiday, each replaced by the next before it has finished speaking. In 10,000 Murmurs, Tan Choon Ting turns to the objects we place our hopes in: a lucky number, a collectible figure, a keepsake we cannot bring ourselves to throw away. His paintings gather such things in luminous abundance, not to honour them, but to ask what they are holding for us.
Behind them sit larger questions. Can the imagination exist without a shape to hold it? Does anyone ever create from nothing? We spend our lives building order, but what if disorder is the very thing that makes us impossible to replicate?
In Tan’s paintings, objects float, perspectives blur and gravity loosens its hold. In a world that never stops talking, these are paintings that listen.
